Our Short-termers
Abi Salter
Abi is doing a gap year internship with the Church Army. She is currently on their “Xplore” programme which is specifically designed for young people. She is based in Sheffield until Christmas and then will be heading abroad in January for a 6 month placement. She is probably going to Australia but plans have changed several times and are still not finalised.
Church Army is an Anglican organisation which aims to reach the 7 out of 10 people across the world who don’t have any link to the church. Their primary focus used to be those who live in down trodden areas of developed countries but they now work all over the world.
In Sheffield Abi is spending time in the classroom learning some theology and looking at effective methods of evangelism and spreading the good news. This is being backed up by practical work with young people as well as adults. Abi is finding that she is incredibly busy.
Within the last couple of weeks she has been to Londonderry, Northern Ireland and also to London. In London, she visited a huge hostel for homeless women where the Church Army bring some Christian hope through practical help to very needy people. In Londonderry, she also visited a hostel for the homeless and took part in 3 services in one of the churches as well.
Abi is currently in Cabramatta, 25km west of Botany Bay, Australia for the overseas part of her Xplore year. She will be there until 11 June 2010.
Praise and Prayer Pointers:
- God to use Abi to share the gospel throughout the year
- Details of placement to be finalised
- Safety and good health especially when abroad
- Energy
- Guidance on what to do in certain situations that arise
- God to continues to work in all areas of Abi’s life and also in Wadsley where she is based
- That Abi gets a renewed sense of God’s calling on her life
Zlatka Hrubik
For many years, we have sponsored a student or student couple through the Oak Hall Bible School in Belgrade, Serbia. This year, we are again sponsoring Zlatka as she does her second year of the course.
She is single and 28 years old. Her home is in Erdevik, a village in the north of Serbia, and she has a degree from the Technical College in Zrejnanin. Among other things she loves music and singing. She met with Christ when she was at college and was baptised in August 2002.
She enrolled for the Bible School because she wanted to know God better and to serve him wherever he wants her to. She has been personally blessed by the courses of lectures at the school, and she is sure this will enable her to be a blessing to others.
The second year programme at the school includes many practical courses including one on Ministry to the Disabled. This is helpful to her as she has a sister who has learning difficulties. She now believes that God is leading her specifically to work with people who have physical and learning disabilities.
Praise Pointers:
- Zlatka’s opportunity to study
- Our support that means so much to her
- God’s call to work with people with special needs
Prayer Pointers:
- God’s continued leading and guidance while she is at Bible School
- For wisdom, strength and patience in preparing for her future ministry
- Zlatka to get a job at the end of the course

Mark
Mark has been a member of our congregation for over 4 years and he and his wife Rosie are usually at the 6.30 pm service. Mark is the Director of the Armed Forces' Christian Union, an organisation of some 2000 members which supports Christians in the UK Armed Forces. He is also involved in the leadership of Flame International, a young and growing Christian NGO whose vision is to reach out with God's love to broken and hurting people, particularly those in the poorest countries of the world, and to see nations healed and walking in reconciliation and forgiveness.
Originally, Flame was born out of a vision to reach military men for Jesus by bringing their wives into a deeper relationship with God. However, its ministry has developed into one of bringing healing, forgiveness and reconciliation, particularly amongst those men and women traumatised by war, principally (but not exclusively) in post-conflict regions of Africa. To do this, Flame holds healing conferences and workshops in partnership with various Christian churches, pastors, chaplains and Christian organisations.
These conferences and workshops aim to bring healing, through the Holy Spirit, to the spirits, souls and bodies of hurting and traumatised people. Reconciliation between individuals plays a large part in Flame's ministry, and this has brought healing to many communities. Moving on a stage further, Flame is now teaching pastors and leaders in these war-torn countries, thus aiming to 'train the trainers' and enable pastors to minister to others. So far, Flame has operated in Sudan, Rwanda, Burundi, Uganda and Sierra Leone, where its ministry has been well received. Southern Sudan will be a priority in 2010 as it reaches a critical stage in the Comprehensive Peace Agreement. Opportunities are opening for Flame to operate in the Middle East.
Mark regularly goes on short term mission trips. Within the last year he has visited Sudan, Rwanda and Burundi. The places Mark visits are spiritually and environmentally challenging; some are not the safest places in the world. Each trip needs to be covered by significant prayer.
